A senior commander who recently defected from the Somali government side was gunned down by unknown gunmen in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, officials report on Saturday.

Sheikh Abdulkadir Hassan Abu Qatatow was shot dead near an insurgent base inside Mogadishu’s Bakara market by unknown people armed with pistols.

Qatatow recently defected from government allied Union of Islamic Courts to Hizbul Islam, one of the powerful islamist insurgent groups fighting the weak UN-backed government headed by former UIC leader Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

Both Hizbul Islam and UIC have condemned the killing of Qatatow who was forefront on the fight against Ethiopian troops which invaded the Horn of African nation in late 2006.

No group has claimed responsibility; however, UIC sees foul play on the side of opposition groups.

Somali opposition groups have joined forces to oust the embattled government and rule the country, which has not known peace for more that 18 years, with harsh version of Islamic Sharia Law.
